Thomas R. Kolb
Thomas R. Kolb, the firm’s Managing Partner, is a 1979 cum laude graduate of Harvard Law School. He began his legal career as a general practitioner in Portland, Maine, after serving for a year as Law Clerk to the Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Court. He later became a corporate and business attorney, practicing as an associate and later as partner in the Boston law firm Rubin & Rudman from 1983 to 1994. During that time, he became increasingly drawn to the area of ERISA and employee benefits because of the unique challenges it presents.
Mr. Kolb left the big-firm practice in 1994 to co-found a two-attorney ERISA boutique. From that time forward he practiced exclusively as an ERISA specialist, becoming increasingly involved in assisting employers of all sizes to operate their tax-qualified retirement plans within the complex and ever-growing maze of government rules and regulations that apply. In so doing, Mr. Kolb developed particular expertise in representing employers in their interactions with the agencies that regulate such plans—principally the IRS and the U.S. Department of Labor—skillfully making use of the various correction programs and other guidance issued by those agencies.
Mr. Kolb’s approach to client representation is highly pro-active, and his goal is always to give advice that is authoritative yet practical. After conducting the practice of Kolb & Associates in the Greater Boston area for more than 25 years, Mr. Kolb relocated the firm to Washington, DC in 2010, where it has experienced continued growth.
Mr. Kolb has published and lectured extensively for professional and non-professional audiences alike. His practice has attracted the attention of national media such as The Wall Street Journal, Inc. Magazine, The National Law Journal and the Reuters news service.
Mr. Kolb was selected to the annual list of top employee benefits attorneys in the Washington, DC region in the 2014 and 2015 editions of Washington Super Lawyers. Previously, he was listed as a “Super Lawyer” in the Massachusetts and New England editions of the same publication.
Mr. Kolb has earned Martindale-Hubbell’s coveted “av” rating, the highest rating accorded to practicing attorneys for legal proficiency and professional ethical standards.
